20 years of friendship
This year, join us in celebrating 20 fantastic years of friendship at the Link Visiting Scheme. We're hosting events throughout the year so let's get together and raise a toast to our wonderful friends!
It all started when...
The Link Visiting Scheme began in 1998 from Woodley Baptist Church. Wanting to reach out to lonely older people near to the church at Christmas, it soon became clear that there was a real need for the church to be involved throughout the year. Volunteers from the Baptist Church under the guidance of Jeremy Sharpe and Chris Cowley continued to run the scheme for 10 years, visiting people in Woodley and the surrounding area.
A partnership began with colleagues at Woodley Age Concern and together an application was made to Wokingham Borough Council to apply for funding to make The Link Visiting Scheme a borough- wide project. We owe many thanks to Colin Preston and Bob Wyatt for their contribution in gaining funding.
In November 2007, The Link Visiting Scheme became a borough wide scheme under the management of Marjie Walker. Partnerships with churches and community groups across the borough helped us grow and develop to where we are now. Today we support nearly 300 older people with over 250 volunteers and a staff team of 6 part time employees.
Help us celebrate 20 years of friendship!
Come along to one of our fabulous events and let's enjoy ourselves together.
