A place to feel safe
A new chapter
John spent much of his working life building and running successful pubs. After starting his career in the police force, he moved into the licensed trade, eventually running several successful pubs and building a busy working life around people and community.
A few years ago, John was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease. As his condition progressed, both he and his wife faced uncertainty about what the future would hold. John remained independent and active, but the challenges of memory loss began to affect his confidence and day-to-day life.
Finding Link Thursdays
After being encouraged to attend Link Thursdays, John quickly found a welcoming environment where he felt comfortable and supported.
"They've really made me feel safe."
What began as a social group soon became an important part of John's weekly routine. Rather than simply attending, he enjoys getting involved and contributing wherever he can, something that helps maintain his confidence and sense of purpose.
"They've offered me things to do - I help out in any way I can."
Feeling part of something
Through Link, John has developed new friendships and become part of a supportive community. He regularly takes part in bowls, outings and group activities, and values seeing familiar faces each week. The regular chance to meet others has helped him stay socially connected. It's also helped him continue enjoying an active lifestyle.
"Every time I come in, there's people around me... we all chat."
While his family remains a vital source of support, Link offers something different: companionship, routine, and a place where he feels valued and included. It has helped reduce the uncertainty he felt following his diagnosis, and given him something positive to look forward to each week.
Today, John describes Link as a place where he feels safe, happy and connected, and it continues to make a real difference to his wellbeing.

Link Thursdays is an award-winning project! A vibrant, welcoming space each week where anyone in the community can just turn up with a guarantee of a warm welcome. We host a range of activities, friendship tables, and pride ourselves with being dementia friendly. The newly refurbished All Saints Church offers hot drinks, freshly baked cakes, and snacks to be enjoyed by all! Join us on Thursdays for a coffee and a chat, or settle in with some knitting or a game of dominoes.
