Christmas Celebrations!

For so many of us, Christmas Day is a day for family, for getting together and celebrating with loved ones. Sadly, however, for some people without family or close friends, it is the loneliest day of the year. Each December the Link Visiting Scheme hosts two important events designed to alleviate the serious impact of loneliness which can be felt particularly acutely at this time of year.

Christmas Day

Our Christmas Day celebration is open to those living in the Wokingham Borough community who are alone on this day. We provide an opportunity to spend the day in the company of others, enjoying delicious food and a festive, party atmosphere. A team of volunteers give up their time to provide transport, catering, hosting and entertaining - everything it takes to ensure it's a special day. We've been running it for seven years, with the number of guests growing each year. In 2018 we hosted 120 local residents.

Christmas Party

Our Christmas party is an excuse to dress up, feel valued and belong to a caring community. For some older people this is the only social invitation they might receive and we want it to be special. We provide food, entertainment, live music and gifts. We plan various ways to empower older people to feel involved in the party, valued and listened to. We enjoy a wonderful family atmosphere with everyone sharing food at mixed tables. We've held a Christmas party for the last 10 years, with over 100 guests enjoying the event each year.

Donate to help us run our events

The cost to run these two events is more than £3,000 which we need to finance from scratch each year. With less than three months to go, we are struggling with funding. Can you help us? Your contribution would be invaluable and means that we can confidently plan these events for this year which are relied upon by so many members of our community. Donate a Christmas present

Alongside providing a day full of joy and companionship on Christmas Day, we would also like to ensure everyone has a present to take away too! For many, this is the only gift they will receive.

Could you donate a Christmas gift up the to value of £10?

It could be toiletries, winter gloves or scarves, socks, books, puzzles or games, chocolates, or special hamper style goodies.

All donations can be dropped off at our office (Westcott Annexe, Westcott Road, Wokingham, RG402ER) between 8:30am - 2:30 pm, Monday - Friday, or call 01189798019 to arrange a pick up time.

Donations gratefully would be so gratefully received before our Christmas Party on December 8th or before Christmas Day.
