Celebrating our Link to Nature project

Link to Nature wins ‘Outstanding’ award

We’re delighted to share that our Link to Nature project has once again been recognised with an ‘Outstanding’ in the RHS It’s Your Neighbourhood Awards! The assessors praised the project for “improving the well-being of our Link Friends through the nature projects they run,” and enjoyed meeting Maureen, one of our Link Friends, who shared how the programme has positively impacted her life.

With our Link to Nature project, we celebrate the simple joys of connecting with the outdoors, no matter the season. We know that feelings of loneliness can make it hard to find motivation to get outside, and the changing months can affect mood and energy. Our project provides a way for older people to re-engage with their gardens, wildlife, and the natural world, bringing both companionship and purpose.

In spring, our Link Friends are encouraged to create bird boxes and feeders, welcoming the first signs of new life. Summer brings opportunities to grow flowers and vegetables, enjoying the sights, smells, and satisfaction of nurturing something from seed to bloom. And even in the colder months, our nature-based indoor activities and crafts keep creativity and connection alive.

One of our Link Friends told us:

“It can be quite boring living alone. Now I am part of Link to Nature, I have all these new friends with common interests. For the first time in years, I am excited about something and I have a focus. It feels wonderful.”

Through gardening, nature walks, and wildlife projects, Link to Nature not only helps our Link Friends enjoy the outdoors but also supports mental and physical wellbeing. Research shows that spending time in nature can reduce stress and anxiety, boost mood, and encourage mobility, all vital for living well as we get older.

We’re incredibly proud that Link to Nature has been recognised once more, and we’re grateful to The National Lottery Community Fund and Wokingham Town Council for supporting this project. Here’s to more seasons of growth, connection, and the simple joys that nature brings!
