Kitty & Mary

Kitty, 82, first approached The Link at a Pie and Pint event. Since Covid, her husband had struggled to go out, and she was looking for something meaningful she could do for herself. Kitty worried she might be “too old” to volunteer, but we reassured her that her warmth, experience and kindness were exactly what many of our Link Friends appreciate most.

We introduced Kitty to Mary, a 93-year-old who is bed-bound and lives with her daughter. Mary has limited opportunities for social contact and was longing for stimulating conversation. During their first visit, Kitty and Mary discovered that they had once worked for the same company at the same time - an unexpected connection that immediately sparked conversation. Kitty later brought a book about the company, and the two spent time looking through it and sharing memories.

The difference the visits have made is remarkable. Mary says having Kitty come each week has brought joy and purpose back into her life, and her daughter loves hearing the two of them talking and laughing together. For Kitty, volunteering has been equally meaningful. She says she isn’t sure who benefits more, describing their time together as uplifting and fulfilling. Kitty has since started attending Space for All sessions too, happily chatting with others and helping them feel welcome.

As Kitty says, “We have a great time together. I hope Mary enjoys it as much as I do.”
