Margaret & Link Thursdays

Margaret is 90 years old and lives with dementia. When her regular volunteer moved away, we were determined not to let that mean the end of her support. Through our Keeping in Touch project, we stayed close, and built a relationship with her wonderful neighbour, who has become one of her most dedicated advocates. He keeps us informed, raises concerns, and genuinely looks out for her every single day.

It was through him that we found out Margaret was struggling to manage her meals from a tray on her lap. It may sound like a small thing, but it was making mealtimes uncomfortable and difficult. We worked with the Occupational Therapist at Adult Social Care to arrange an over-chair table — a simple solution that made a real difference. By working closely with her care staff, we also made sure she could still get to our Thursday café, join us for Christmas Day lunch, and continue attending Wade after her transport fell through.

A highlight came when Margaret joined one of our Fit for Life sessions. She took part in a hoop-throwing activity — and scored a perfect 100%. The room loved it, and so did she.

Margaret's story is a reminder that support doesn't always look the same for everyone. Sometimes it means working quietly in the background, with neighbours, care staff, and volunteers, to make sure someone feels safe, connected, and celebrated.
