Wilfred & David

Wilfred is 87 and has lived in the area for many years, having originally moved to be close to his son and family after the death of his wife. More recently, as his dementia has progressed, he moved into a flat adjoining his son's home so the family could keep a closer eye on him. They are devoted to him, but they work full time, and the weekdays can be long and quiet.

His son referred him to The Link, and we set about finding him the right match. Wilfred had always loved dogs, and enjoyed a good walk, so we introduced him to volunteer David, whose plan was simple: a weekly stroll around the lake at Dinton Pastures with his dog in tow. Wilfred loved the idea straight away, and from their very first walk together, it was clear the two of them had clicked.

As Wilfred's dementia has progressed, those walks have taken on an even greater importance. The familiar route, the fresh air, the dog… it all brings him comfort and something to look forward to each week. Though he is gradually losing his ability to communicate, he lights up when he sees David arrive. David told us: “We always have a lovely walk around the lake. Wilfred enjoys being with my dog and he loves saying hello and smiling to other people passing us.”

His son put it simply: "David has been a real bonus to dad and he enjoys seeing him every week.”

Sometimes the quietest, most consistent kind of friendship is exactly the right kind.
